Debt Advice Charities Explained
Charity for Debt Relief:
Many people are told when they are in debt to go talk to a charity for debt relief. In general, people are told that debt support charities are the best option because they do not charge the client for advice. In order to obtain benefits, debt advice providers usually charge the client for the advice to obtain an income stream.
Charities for debt relief can be divided into three different categories. The difference between these charities depends on who owns them and where the funding is provided. Each has its advantages and, in general, they are better than for-profit organizations.
The three types of debt counseling charity include government-funded, funded by creditors and funded by solutions.
Positive
- The most independent form of debt advice.
- Funded by the government for the safest.
Negatives
- The waiting time can be 8 weeks or more to see a specialist.
- Advice is usually provided by volunteers and this may mean that the quality of advice and knowledge is not always the best in the industry

The three types of debt counseling charity include government-funded, funded by creditors and funded by solutions.
Financed by the government
A government-funded debt counseling charity is the Citizens Advice Bureau, where volunteers and funded advisors provide advice on debt counseling. You can go to the Citizens Advice Office in your area to get advice and help about your debts. There are positive and negative options for the Citizens Advice Office.
Positive
- The most independent form of debt advice.
- Funded by the government for the safest.
Negatives
- The waiting time can be 8 weeks or more to see a specialist.
- Advice is usually provided by volunteers and this may mean that the quality of advice and knowledge is not always the best in the industry
Creditor financed
The second type of debt counseling charity is an option financed by the creditor. Debt charities, such as CCCS, National Debtline and Payplan, are funded by creditors. People who have indebted clients, such as major banks and credit lenders, will donate money to charities financed by creditors to allow them to give advice on debt. Again, there are positive and negative aspects of this type of debt charity.
Positive
- The advice is usually immediate.
- The state of charity must mean that charity is not focused on making a profit
Negatives
- Counseling is provided by an organization funded by your creditors.
- There are some people who believe that the council is biased towards creditors and that they may be asked to pay their debt for more than 20 years.
Financed solution
The solution financed by the debt council is an organization like the Debt Support Trust. Charity helps people through the telephone and the internet. This type of charity receives its funding by helping the client gather their papers and present the client to a company to provide the solution.
Positive
- The advice is usually immediate.
- The state of charity must mean that charity is not focused on making a profit
Negatives
- The money to continue helping other people comes from a small percentage of solutions.
- While this type of charity does not seek to make a profit, they do need sufficient income to help clients continue to help other people. The payment received by this type of charity does not come directly from the person in the pocket of the debts.
What is the best type of debt charity?
Each debt counseling charity has its benefit and negative. Do you want to wait for a debt advice, want to talk to a charity funded by the people who gave you the debt, or would you rather talk to a charity that receives a payment for introducing you to a debt solutions company?
The alternative option is to speak with a company that will charge you a tip and can place you in an incorrect debt solution (for example, the debt management plan for more than 40 years).
The safest route for people in debt is the charity of the debt. The organization of the debt you choose to choose is your decision, but our advice would be to speak with several debt organizations to see which is the most supportive. You can also talk to a number of debt charities to see what debt solutions they recommend and decide which one you want to follow.
